Winning project for the masterplan of the former Sani barracks in the Bolognina district.
The proposal behind Passages aims to transform an ex-military site into part of a linear park stretching north-south between the Bolognina and Expo neighborhoods. The project is structured by four large gardens and a pedestrian passageway around which the built program is freely organized. Primary to the proposal is a concern for the quality of open space through forms of gardens, courtyards, pedestrian and bicycle circulation and the overall reduction of the presence of cars. The main public program—an intermediate school adjacent to the Bolognina neighborhood—is located in the northwest quadrant of the site and surrounded by a circular forest. Complemented by new structures, the existing built fabric is retained and converted into spaces for living and working. Special attention is given to typology in an effort to provide new forms of affordable housing to not only families but also to temporary dwellers, students, newcomers to Italy, and those searching for new ways to live together.
