Pedro e Inês
Pedro e Inês, staged at Teatro Camões (CNB- The National Ballet of Portugal). Set design by João Mendes Ribeiro, Choreography and Dramaturgy by Olga Roriz
Pedro e Inês set design features an unquestionably minimal architecture: an empty stage with only one rectangular platform. It explores the idea of a horizontal plan and its intersection with the dancers' bodies and movements, creating a strong relationship with the ground.
The rectangular platform brings to life an existing location, where lovers' prince Pedro and noblewoman Inês would secretly meet – the Fonte dos Amores from Quinta das Lágrimas (the Love Fountain in the Quinta das Lágrimas estate).
Images being projected on stage create a stronger but deceptive connection to the Quinta das Lágrimas atmosphere – roots from a tree, canebrake, water reflections, red roses,... Real materials, such as water and soil, were used, giving a bigger sense of illusion.
A narrow water channel portrays the water spring, with its movement and sounds, and reveals a pond. In this pond, the dancers' bodies make their most expressive movements and show the performance highlight.
The water and its movements reflect the light and fill the empty stage, recalling places and memories from the tragic love story between Pedro and Inês.
